voice reel

Aren't you the one who really wants to "Let's party"?

Name: Nakai Kazuya ( )
Birthday: November 25, 1967
Birthplace: Hyougo-ku, Kobe, Japan
Blood Type: A
Talent Agency: Aoni Production
Official HP: Page at Aoni Production

Nakai Kazuya is the voice of Hijikata in Gintama, and probably due to the nature of his voice, just so happens to be pretty well known for some rowdy characters (a lot of which also happen to be swordsmen-- Zoro of One Piece, Date Masamune of Sengoku Basara, Mugen of Samurai Champloo). That being said, one could say that Hijikata is right up his alley. Though I personally enjoy Nakai's acting in these roles the most (nothing beats a manly swordsman with Nakai's growl!), he's also done his fair share of softer-sided characters, so he certainly isn't a one trick pony. You can hear two examples of Nakai's role as Hijikata below:

[ ep. 35: mayora 13 ] [ ep. 87: mitsuba ]

He first debuted as a voice actor as Witz Sou in After War Gundam X, which aired in Japan from April 1996 to March 1997. Nakai enjoys driving and archery as his hobbies, and is married with one child. He also apparently enjoys going to Disneyland, but I dunno, who doesn't? Voice of swordsmen!

And, just as a fun little aside, here are some other things related to Nakai Kazuya that might be of interest to Nakai/Shinsengumi/samurai fans. If you happen to know any other factoids that would set all our Nakai-loving souls on fire, please don't be afraid to let me know!

BAKUMATSU RENKA SHINSENGUMI
Gintama is certainly not Nakai's first role as a member of the Shinsengumi: he plays Harada Sanosuke in the dating game, Bakumatsu Renka Shinsengumi. This game had a live event in 2009 where the voice actors performed/read script in front of an audience while dressed like the historical Shinsengumi. Though unrelated to Gintama, for any fans of Nakai's rendition of Hijikata it's a little like a dream come true!

PUT YOUR GUNS ON!
In episode 184 of Gintama, during the Character Ranking arc, Katsura makes a reference to Nakai's role in Sengoku Basara, in which he plays the character Date Masamune (famous for randomly speaking English, riding his horse like a Harley and for his missing right eye-- something that parallels with Kyuubei of Gintama). Later on in the episode, Otae is fighting against Hijikata and claims that he probably wants to say "Let's Party!" more than anyone else, and Hijikata gets angry at her for breaking the fourth wall.

THE INFAMOUS TOSSHI POSE
During the 2010 Gintama Matsuri, Nakai and real-life Shinpachi fellow castmate Sakaguchi Daisuke get psyched up before a performance by Otsuu and scream "Necromancer!" for the crowd. You can see the two nerding it up in their respective character's otaku outfits: Shinpachi in his Otsuu uniform and Hijikata in his Tosshi outfit, and even holding his arm like Tosshi does in the anime!
